Master Cleanse, pregame thoughts

If you follow my twitter, you probably know I’ve been hemming and hawing about trying the master cleanse for about a week now. I have committed to starting on Tuesday evening, and I’ll have to admit, I’m a bit nervous. I’m probably making more of it than it is, and I’ll blame the internet and it’s endless supply of blogs and articles to psych me out. I feel like I’m doing it for the right reasons though, so I’m trudging forward.
So why am I doing it? A few things. First, I really want to kick my caffeine and sugar addictions. I have given them both up in the past, and it was responsible for me losing nearly 70 pounds. Those pounds have slowly crept back on over the last two years, and I’m getting dangerously close to where I started. I’ve gotten to the point where I drink anywhere from 3-5 cups of coffee a day, and with that comes lots of soy cream and sugar. Second, I want to reset my satiety levels. I went with my mom to an informational meeting about weight loss surgery, and the doctor said something that really stuck with me. Someone asked a question and said something about “stomachs shrinking/stretching”, and he corrected them, saying that was just a myth. Your stomach doesn’t stretch or shrink, just your mental perception of what satisfies you. You can sort of train yourself to be satisfied with a smaller portion, and what better way to do that than not eat for 10 days?
Seriously though, I am hoping to challenge myself and my will power, cleanse my colon (thoroughly), and take a new look at my relationship with food.
I apologize in advance, but my blog will revolve around lemons and poop for about 14 days starting on Tuesday.
It’s been surprising to hear about how many other people have done this at some point, and the response has been extremely positive for the most part. I’d love to hear experiences from anyone else!

I plan to try it again. What killed me were the headaches I got. Good luck.

I started this cleanse, or at least a version of it. I was allowed to eat, but only fish and a couple of different vegetables (and of course the lemon and maple sugar mixture). I also was supposed to drink a shake every day that contained clay and flax seed and raspberries and some other stuff. It was gross and tasted like mud and raspberries. I finished day 2 and made it to the very beginning of day three when I caved. My problem? Pete and Katie (who was then our roommate) kept making food and eating in front of me. They were total jerks about it, too. I eventually caved wen somebody ordered pizza and was sharing. I was pretty mad at myself, but mostly because the stuff I had bought for the cleanse was really expensive! I wasted something like a hundred bucks in salmon, clay, and other weird dirt-tasting products that I never used again.
Good luck to you in your cleansing endeavors. Don’t let Ben eat around you, or even cook in the house unless you have amazing willpower. Just the smell of food may drive you up the wall with hunger!

My mom did a colon cleanse, with the idea of eventually moving on the the Master Cleanse, and if I remember correctly her doctor told her she really needed to stop immediately. I don’t remember how or why, so maybe it was for reasons specific to my mom only. (I can always ask my mom if you’re that curious to know.) I guess my point is to just be careful.

My husband has done this cleanse several times over the years and has really benefited from it. He had severe allergies to lots of things (pollen, pets, dust, etc.) and after his first cleanse he was able to go from taking prescription allergy medicine on a daily basis to 4-5 times a year. He always comes out of the cleanse excited and full of energy. My advice would be to start eliminating caffeine immediately. You will probably have headaches for a few days and it is better to have that part over with before you start cleansing, so that you can take some pain medicine. Also, most important cleanse advice ever: DON’T FART – it’s not a fart!

I did the 10 day version. Jenny’s advice is pretty good – try to stop or seriously curtail the caffeine now, the headaches are a bitch. Be prepared to be cranky. Tell your co-workers why you’re going to be/are cranky. I’m not sure exactly which version you’re doing (aside from lemons and maple syrup (I’m assuming) but I used cayenne pepper too (about a quarter of the time). It’s an.. odd taste, but after the first couple days you’ll be dying for something other than lemon.

@Jenny and Ross- I had my last coffee on Saturday, so by Tuesday I should be over the worst of it, I think!
@everyone else… thanks for the encouragement! I’ll keep everyone posted!!
