Cause you believe me somehow

When B and I had our first real fight when we were dating we went to this little hole in the wall bar called ‘Tips’ in Eagle River to have a drink and talk it out (this was obviously a long time ago as neither of us drink anymore). It was a dark bar with big padded booth seating and dart boards, a bottle-blonde bartender with a raspy voice and big hair. There was a thick haze of cigarette smoke eerily illuminated by the low hanging bar lights over the pool tables. We sat next to each other and talked quietly to one another and held hands, feeling slightly injured that a bump had come into our otherwise perfect road. We were both taking such a big risk by living together so quickly, and he had moved 5000 miles to live with me after knowing me for such a short time, and I was about to move to Arizona and do the same for him. We had nagging reservations, but we knew we loved one another and the reality of being in a committed relationship was dissolving the haze of new love as we figured out that we were real people underneath all our bliss. We sat in that booth together quietly for a long time, just thinking and holding hands. Neither of us said much that night. I can still remember looking up at him and feeling that even though we had a rough patch, I didn’t want to run. I hadn’t felt that in a really long time.

As we sat in the bar, the song ‘Sideways’ came on the Jukebox. I had no idea who it was at the time, but I fell in love with the voice of the man singing. It was permeating and stayed with me long after I heard it. Clarence Greenwood’s voice is almost haunting, and you can feel what he’s feeling when he sings. The song played three times on the Jukebox that night, and ever since then it’s always made me think of how much I love B regardless of the snags we’ve encountered along the way. We’ve both come out of it better, stronger, and more in love with each other than when we started.

Citizen Cope- Sideways

I’ve been a fan of Citizen Cope ever since, and have recently had his song ‘Somehow’ stuck on repeat. It rivals ‘Sideways’ as one of my favorite soulful love songs.

Citizen Cope- Somehow

I missed a chance to see him live right after we moved to Arizona and I’ve always regretted it. Hopefully I’ll get another chance eventually because I wont make that mistake again.

oh man, i LOVE citizen cope. my roommate got me hooked on him a few years ago. she made me sit in her car and listen to “sideways” and then i went home and bawled my eyes out because it was one of those “perfect song” moments. you know, the ones that just explain what youre going through so much better than you ever could. ahh, good times. haha.

have you heard the version with the electric guitar? it is a million times better, and thats saying a lot because this song is pretty much perfect.

i just missed seeing him in portland, too. the show was sold out and we couldn’t get tickets. soooo sad. :(

I saw him last year in a Barnes and Nobles in NYC, one of the best shows I’ve seen – he has this fantastically craggy voice that really comes out live.
