I heart the 90′s
Posted by Molly on January 17th, 2008. Filed under: VINTAGE: Early SW Posts by MissMolly (Now of MoreThanHeels.com).As much as I like the 80′s nostalgia, the 90′s will always have my heart. So many fond (and some not so fond) memories. High school dances, sleepovers with girlfriends, prank calls (no caller ID!), pagers and making out… plus lots of bad hair, bad clothes and great music. Erica posted the VH1 list of the 100 best songs of the 90′s, and shared some of the memories attached to her favorites. I think I’ll do the same! Keortge, don’t judge.
The Breeders- Cannonball
I didn’t remember what song this was until I looked it up on iTunes. I think this song was in the movie Clueless but I don’t remember, but as soon as I heard it, it took me back. It makes me think of my girlfriends and how this was about the time we started being ‘girls’. We passed notes to boys, talked about who liked who, and had locker-side romances. Ah, those were simpler times. I should pass Ben a note… “Did you do the laundry? Circle one- YES NO”
Marcy Playground- Sex and Candy
One of the catchiest songs I can think of, it still lingers in my head if I hear it randomly to this day. I actually only have one degree of separation from this band- a friend from work’s wife (who I’m also friends with) has hung out with the members of Marcy Playground a few times. Small world, huh?
Jay-Z- Can I get a…
I moved to Wasilla in 1995 and there were like two radio stations that even mildly appealed to a high school student at the time. One was the top 40 station, and the other played rock. There wasn’t a ‘hip hop’ station at all. One day in gym class someone said if you turned your radio to 92.9 it would play ‘Can I get a…’ by Jay-Z over and over again. They were right. A few weeks later, they upped it to a few other rap and hip hop songs by people like Snoop, Ice Cube, Lauren Hill and Blackstreet. It was just on a continuous loop with no commercials or any DJ’s. It was amazing. Unfortunately, they progressively got more and more commercial, and now they are completely sold out and even have a jingle and a morning show. Anyway, this song reminds me of the fledgling radio station that probably got started by some dude in his basement who liked hip hop.
Beck- Loser
I was in middle school for the height of the grunge era, and you WEREN’T cool unless you had a wife-beater with ‘Hole‘ written in black sharpie across the chest, and you knew all the words to ‘Loser’ and could recite them on demand. Keep in mind that this song has the decade’s most unintelligible chorus, and we couldn’t really look up lyrics on the internet yet. I think we all had our own ideas as to what was being said, and I doubt any of us had any real clue.
Beastie Boys- Sabotage
I spent the entire summer between 8th and 9th grade with my best friend Vanessa skateboard around Wasilla. I had just moved there, and Vanessa came to spend time with me before school started. We were just figuring out that we were pretty, but we hadn’t given up baggy clothes and skateboarding. My mom would drop us off at noon with our skateboards and ten bucks, and pick us up at 10pm. We’d eat 89 cent cheeseburgers from McDonald’s every day. I even ended up making one of the guys who worked there one of my first real boyfriends *shudder*. Anyway, we listened to Beastie Boys pretty much non stop, and was one of my favorite songs because it was fun to skateboard to. It made me feel like I was in the music video!
That list seriously brought me back. Naturally, there are also a bunch on there that didn’t make the cut, such as anything off NIN’s album ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ or Sublime’s self titled album… even the soundtrack to the movie ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ Don’t laugh, I know you had it too. If you didn’t, your sister did.

Wow, this post brings back memories! I was too young to fully appreciate the ’80′s and am definately a product of the 90′s both musically and style-wise. I had a collection of flannel shirts that would have made Kurt Cobain proud!

I remember finding myself sixth grade choir as well as we did some sort of disney medley of songs plus it was the most fun Thought about in choir. Arabian Evenings, Always be Our Guest, Make out the Girl, Beneath the Sea will be the ones that go to memory from the item. They have to bring some in the movies out of their damn Disney vault.
