Greek Soup and Insensitivity

I had been dying to veganize this tasty looking Greek Soup recipe that PrissyCook posted a few days ago, so I went for it on Sunday night. She’s always good for sophisticated recipes that pull beyond my penchant for comfort food. My only changes were that I used three color fusilli pasta instead of tortellini, I used veggie bullion instead of chicken broth, and I accidentally bought basil instead of oregano, but I don’t think that made any earth shattering differences. Oh… and omitted the chicken of course.

I think it was delicious, but Ben wasn’t a fan. I chalk that up to him having an unrefined palette,  however next time I think I’ll use half of the can of artichokes instead of the whole one and I think it’ll win him over.

We found a great little Sushi restaurant not too far from our house last night called Ichiban on Tudor and Lake Otis. I’m not a sushi fan, so while Ben ordered a vegetarian roll, I had a veggie tempura plate and some miso soup. Everything was amazing, the miso soup was easily the best I’ve had. The veggie tempura had not just the usual veg, but also pumpkin, sweet potato and zucchini. I did, however, manage to make a complete ass of myself just after the entree was served. I asked the lovely waitress if she had any sweet and sour sauce for my tempura, which evoked a confused look, and she then called the other waitress over, asking if they had any… she promptly informed me that sweet and sour sauce is Chinese fare, and we were in a Japanese restaurant. My face turned red, I slumped down in my seat and apologized for being an ethnocentric bastard. I tipped generously, and took my to-go box which was marked ‘lady’ in pen on the top so I knew mine from Ben’s.

*sigh*

I sure hope someone out there in the blogosphere learns from my embarrassment.
